TUNISIA, officially the Republic of Tunisia, is the northernmost country in Africa. Tunisia has an association agreement with the European Union and is member of la Francophonie, the Arab Maghreb Union, the Arab League and the African Union. Among Tunisia’s tourist attractions are its cosmopolitan capital city of Tunis, the ancient ruins of Carthage, the Muslim and Jewish quarters of Jerba, and coastal resorts outside of Monastir. According to the New York Times, Tunisia is « known for its golden beaches, sunny weather and affordable luxuries. » From ancient times to modern day, Tunisia boasts a well-deserved reputation throughout North Africa as an important center of commerce and trade.
